Building code requires that areas like stairwells must be minimally lit 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Millions of fluorescent lamps are burning 30 to 40 Watts continuously  … unnecessarily.

The client’s idea was: Make a twist-snap-in replacement for the fluorescent lamp that has:

  • LED lamps at one end of the 48 inch span that provide the required minimum light,
  • An infrared motion detector at the other end of the 48 inch span,
  • A 32 inch fluorescent lamp in the middle that gets turned on by the motion detector.

The LED lamps consume only 5 Watts. Depending on the foot traffic in the stairwell, the payback time is less than three years.
