Arctic Buoys (1993-1994):
The V-shaped object in the left foreground under the helicopter is buoy. It is plugged into a six foot hole in the arctic ice. Twenty three of these buoys were deployed in the arctic for nine months. They used and ARGOS transmitter to report their GPS position every hour.

Challenge: Operate at - 40 C for nine months. Surprise: Polar bears and arctic foxes eat antennas.

Arctic Buoys (1997-1998):
Six of the 1993 buoys were retrieved and have been modified for a more ambitious experiment. The time-table has been extended to one year.

Challenge: Bigger batteries and interfacing to complex instruments with unique communications protocols. (Same antennas: Have fun bears!)
